He heard something in the distance. There was a lot of talking, laughing, and rustling of bushes - but he found himself too scared to come up suddenly at all. The young Ponyta tiptoed closer to the noises, spanning his movements over minutes at a time. If he was close enough, he'd dart behind a tree or bush.
When he thought he'd gotten close enough to see what was going on, the foal noticed... there was no one around. His eyes widened. He wanted to panic, but maybe it was all just inside his head? Scared stiff, Pax remained hidden in a branchy bush, peering around the area for any signs of life. Well, there was a breathing plant... thing? A Bulbasaur? he thought. There's got to be others around here... are they hiding..?

Lala was still looking unsuccessfully for her friends and relatives hiding in the nearby {she hoped} bushes. ~Well, my herdsisters know not to go too far...~ The young tropius saw them nowhere, though.
" Lookie that," said Kikko, staring at the ponyta just up ahead. Lala turned around and looked at him too and gasped. He'd gotten pretty close to her without her noticing!
" Hi," she said to the ponyta. " Where'd you come from?"

Pax gasped upon seeing them. He'd never seen something like that before - who were they?? He turned right around and dashed behind thick tree trunk, hoping they wouldn't take notice. Without knowing whether they were predator or prey, he'd rather be safe than sorry..! Of course... they had some kind of fruit growing on them... what kind of predator would hold that attribute? He peeked around the opposite side of the trunk at them to get another look, then immeditaly hid again.

Lala was actually too young to be growing fruit yet, and so was Kikko, but their herd elders just beyond them had plenty of fruit. " Oh, don't be scared," she said when she saw the ponyta hide.
" I see you!" said Kikko. He thought the ponyta was playing the hiding game too now. He went around to the other side of the tree. "I find you!"

"Nree!" the Ponyta whinnied, leapt up, and fell smack upon his haunches. He stared at the other Pokemon through big black eyes, trying to back away, but a bush prevented it. "Please don't hurt me! I-I... I..." the words lost their way in his throat and he just continued to gawk at the young Tropius. In a few moments he calmed down, seeing as the Pokemon wasn't advancing or threatening... "I... I'm... Pax," he whispered, his snout facing down.

Crest awoke hearing the foal's whinny. "Eh uh we won't hurt cha child," he said, pushing the sleep away. He got up. "We're all prey 'round here son." His voice was soft and he tried to ease the scared ponytah foal. "Your a bit young to be alone aren't ya? Well you'll stay here I hope." He didn't mention the pack, not wanting to frighten the foal anymore than he already was.

"Huh?" Pax looked over to the Ivysaur, who he'd seen earlier and mistaken for a Bulbasaur. He quickly took another gander around the area, and noticed more and more Pokemon coming out into the open. They might've been hiding... But the Ponyta cleared his head and thought about what the Ivysaur had told him. Stay with... these grass Pokemon? Regardless, they seemed to be friendly, and Pax desperately needed a safe haven for him to settle into. "Uh... I guess... it'd be okay," his eyes quickly looked at each of the Pokemon around him. "to stay." he wanted to smile, but stopped himself. "Who... who are you?"

" Prey? I hope we don't become that!" said Lala. She knew what that was, that meant being a pokemon that got eaten. Like her father, Herdfather...

"We won't," reassured Crest. He looked back at Pax. "I'm Crest. It's nice to have you here, Pax." He smiled and glanced at Lala again. "It's really the quickest way to let someone else know we won't eat them," he said with a chuckle.

"Hi... Crest..." He said. But Pax did not know what the word 'prey' meant. He knew predator from his mother's warnings... The Ponyta shook his head. "Eat them? What does that mean?" he looked to Crest for a definition, then to the Tropius, then to Crest again. "Does.. it have to do with predator?" he croaked, ears flattened backwards.

"Yes," said Crest. "If you get eaten, you become prey. We are natural prey--dogs and other predators try to eat us--but we usually avoid it." He hoped his definition didn't scare the poor ponytah anymore than he already was.

Lala didn't like her kind or their kinds here in general being referred to as prey. That was something that their predators did. She wasn't prey, after all! At least, she had no intention of becoming such.
" Hey Lala!" called a voice and the older tropius calf popped her head out of a bush. " I thought you were looking for us!"
" Sorry," said Lala. " But we met a ponyta."

ace came out of his hole. He shot a glance at the ponyta and started back for the camp. He was scared of fire pokemon.

Kikko ran after Lala. " Come baaaak!" His voice bounced with his clumsy baby steps.

Lala stopped midway between her herdbrother, who was actually her half brother, Kikko, and the ponyta. She stood back to let them get acquainted.
" Fiyaa!" said Kikko. " You fiya."

Pax looked at Ace, feeling a little better now that others were talking more regularly. "I'm.. okay," he said shyly. "How are you?" he said in a soft tone, tilting his head. The flames of his mane and legs blazed calmly for the little Tropius who shouted 'fiyaaa.' They were harmless for now, and Pax smiled (on the inside) at the child's interest.

Ace smiled. This was not like that Chimchar at the lab he had been inprisoned in for a while, this fire pokemon was nice. "I am fine," Ace said. "Will you be sticking around?"

"Yes," Pax nodded briskly and suddenly. "Er... I hope so." The Ponyta shook his head. "But fire... this fire doesn't hurt," he began, then paused in thought. After a moment, he spoke again. "If you're... not a threat... then the fire won't hurt you," he tried to reassure the grass Pokemon around him. "That's... that's what my mom said. But uh," he tried to forget. "What are all of your names?" Pax asked, his ears perking up.

" I'm Lala, and this is Kikko," said Lala.
" I'm Nadillia," said the oldest tropius calf, the one with fruit just starting to grow around her neck.
The other female calf, who was older than Lala but younger than Nadillia, came out too. " Guess I win the game, huh."
" We weren't playing anymore, we called it off," said Nadillia. " Anyway the ponyta wants to know our names."
" Natalya," said the final tropius with a smirky smile at Pax. " And you are?"

Wow, they have such strange names... the Ponyta wondered. "Hello everyone. I'm Pax. But uh... I'm sorry if I stopped whatever you were all doing. What... were you doing?" he asked, seeming more pleasant by the minute.

" We were playing hide and seek," said Nadillia. " You can join us if you want to."
" He can't unless Herdmother Lyra says so," said Natalya.
Nadillia gave her younger herdsister a look of -_-. " They're right there watching us. If they had a problem with it they would've said so."
" Still," said Natalya.
" It's fine," said Lyra, hoping to settle an argument before it started.

Pax appeared to smile with his eyes after the two Tropius bickered. He knew what hide and seek was! "That'd be fun. Who's it?" he asked.

" I saw him hide!" said Natalya, laughing.
Lala sighed loudly. " Ace, you hafta hide again?"
" You don't know where he's hiding," said Nadillia, " only that he went in that direction."
" I can find him," said Natalya.
" But I'm finding, not you," said Lala. " Okay." She went to the tree and hid her eyes again. " Everyone hide again! One...two...three..."
