Light.
Light was his foe. For twelve or more hours a day, he was trapped in the shadows. He was little more than tidal trash, refuse tossed around on the night tides. He sighed. As much as he hated the light, he loved it. He loved the sparkle it gave every creature that slid by his hiding place. He loved the warm caressed that filtered so lovingly through the water and grew where ever it touched. The giant muddy plate eyes shifted focus on a tiny morsel suspended near the exit of his rocky den.
~So tiny. So very tiny and yet so much more perfect than me. ~Gads thought as he watched it swim effortlessly. ~Look at how it turns with no fear of the sun. ~
Gads' tiny fins undulated, jerking him forward awkwardly. He inspected the sparkling perfect seeming creature a few moments longer before parting his thick pouting lips.
THUP!
Gads sighed and stopped moving his fins. He sank with his mood to the bottom of his tiny little niche in the reef. Eating was less of a guilty chore for him at night. He couldn't admire the food if he didn't see it so well. The fish rested its long muzzle shaped pouted lips on the top of his potbellied frame, his tail curled securely around a broken fragment of corsola horn. Gads let his focus slide and shift around the darkest areas of his home. His mind teetered and fell into the soft motion of the water around him. He did not sleep, but this was close enough to it. He could let his mind safely distance itself from all thought. He was safe from things that might see him as food, and safer from things that saw him as fun to pick on.
Gads would rest now. He could rest deeply down here.
At least, he could rest until the next shiny perfect little creature danced around mockingly in the little ray of light that invaded his sanctuary....
...and his prison until the sun above the furthest limits of his world faded away.

Crystalania's little fins shuffled her through the water. Dawn was coming, and by day, she could see much better. The young feebas fry was scared of being eaten, but hungry after going most of the night without anything to eat. She hadn't been lucky enough to find anything in her overnight hiding place in the reef.
A tiny little something darted by her and straight towards a dark area. Crystalania saw it was a tiny fish, tiny enough to EAT! She darted after it, and straight into where Gads was hiding. Crysta luckily snapped it up. "Mmmm!"

In the same instance that the sparkle zipped by, neurons in Gads' head snapped on and shoved his saucer shaped lenses into focus with a twitch. The realization that he was no longer at rest took a moment to sink in. Instinctively, he froze all movement in his body and waited. Nothing felt dangerous to him. It wasn't the slide of an octillery arm, or the invasion of some crustacean form of sea pokemon. Gads relaxed and began to undulate his fins. Slowly, his tail released the chunk of corsola horn he was anchored to.
~Tasty little morsel, I'm sure.~ Gads thought to himself. He gave a small exhale through his gills. The pot-bellied horsea could taste and smell the new creature in the flow of water around his home. Rocking his bulky jerkily, propelled by his fins, Gads pressed forward to further investigate. He locked his eyes on the feebas fry.
He had been out to eat earlier that night and was fairly full, but like most fish, he wasn't about to let an opportunity to feed pass by. Gads began to size up the young fish in front of him.
"Nope.... nup... bah." Gads moved his lumpish looking lips, "Can't do it... won't fit." He kept focus on the wriggly fish and wondered what it might do. He'd be most displeased if it began to make fun of him. It looked rather young, definitely younger than he was. Gads wasn't sure what he should do, or if he should do anything. Maybe it would be best if he just sank to the bottom of his rocky refuge and left it alone. He couldn't eat it, and he didn't think it could harm him.
Gads bobbed in the space behind the little fry. ~Bet I just frighten it away anyways~

Crystalania narrowed her eyes. Fit? Then it clicked, yep, he thought she was fishfood. "Me fit inside your big tummy? I think NOT, I am NOT food. No way, no way." She swam around so that she was facing him again. He was a strange looking one, no doubt, but since hatching, she had seen so many different creatures around the reef that his strangeness did not seem out of place at all. She was just grateful to have met someone who wasn't big enough to try and eat her in one gulp. "Besides, if you ate me, you'd be all alone again. That can get really boring. So...um..." Crystalania took on the beginnings of a smile on her plump little fish lips. "What do they call your kind of fish?" She was trying to keep track of all the different kinds she encountered, her goal was to eventually know the name of every kind of critter that crawled, slunk or swam this reef. Or just sat in it.

"Freak, fugly, go away, let me eat you and spare you a lifetime of misery...." Gads replied dully. The young fish wanted to talk. He was undecided on whether or not he would enjoy this, but she was right about him being alone if he had eaten her. "My dad was a beautiful example of Kindra. I'm not sure what my mother was.... something, er, big I think. I never saw her."
Gads stopped talking for a second. He realized he was beginning to talk about stuff he'd not thought about for a while. Trying not to get eaten in the coral reef did not afford him allot of time to reflect on his short time in his father's care. He hadn't even given too much thought on the multitude of siblings who were dumped off along with him in the ocean. Were there any left? Did they care about him at all? Had they also become as unwanted by the day time as he had?
Gads refocused his thoughts onto the tiny fish, "Uh, I guess the short answer is a horsea... of some kind, and my name is Gads. It's uh, what my dad called me when I first left his pouch." Should he ask her the same kind of question? Did he really want to know or start to get involved? He bet she would just leave him behind anyways. Gads hovered in the same depth in the water, maintaining eye contact with his accidental home guest.

"Oh, noooo!" Crystalania's stubby little fins fluttered, creating a mild layer of turbulence around her and causing her to move backwards, but she quickly corrected it and swam forward again. She didn't want him to think she was backing away from him in fright! "You're not fugly! You look strange, but everybody I've met since I left the nest looks strange so you're like everybody else really. Yeah, you look a lil like a Horsea. You're probably some kind of horsea. Well if your dad was a Kingdra then of COURSE you're a horsea. My mother and my father were both Milotics. I dun remember them too good--I swam away from the nest some time after I hatched. There wasn't much food around, mostly because all my sibs and I were always fighting over what was there. And there were like...a bajillion of us! I'm called Crystalania. I thought of that name myself. My sis Gren said it was too fancy shmancy but I think she was just jealous cause she could only think up Gren. We all named ourselves. I've been called food or prey a couple times...by some big nasties trying to eat me. I had some close calls." Her fins fluttered again, sort of gesturing while she spoke, and she kind of swished a little side to side, expressing herself in conversation without realising it. "So, uh, is this where you live?"

"More or less. Uh, sometimes I get kicked out of places. I've been in this spot, uh, I think a couple of week." Gads answered. He flexed and rolled his fins and moved a little ways toward the exit, "I usually just stick around here and rest until the light goes away." His mud colored body shifted again, his tail uncurled completely in a stretch. "If you want to, I don't mind if you hang out." Gads pressed his lips together to stop anymore new concepts from leaving them. He hovered a moment before speaking again.
"So, uh Crystalania, er, can I call you something shorter?" Gads thought that such a long name might be hard to call to in a moment's notice. "I mean, er, I like how long your name is, but it's a mouthful. I could say, call you something easier like, Nia?"

A sharpedo stalked the waters, looking for a meal. He spotted Gads and Crystalinia from a distance. Gads looked odd to him. He refused to blindly attack an unfamiliar pokemon. For all he knew, it could be stronger. He decided to keep his distance and watch their actions instead. For now.

"You can call me Cris," said Crystalania. "That's what my sis called me. Before we left the nest. Yeah, it's long, but I like it because it's pretty." Being as young as she was, she had simply thought of the most beautiful name she could think of without stopping to think of how usable it was. "I'm gonna be a milotic one day and milotics need beautiful names." She thougth she saw something out the corner of her eye, and peered out of the crevice's exit. She gasped and swam straight backwards to the rear of Gads's home. "It's a sharpedo! I think he's waiting for us to come out! How'd he even know we're in here!" It didn't occur to her that he had probably smelled them. Full of fear, she swam cautiously back towards the cave exit, still well out of reach of the predator, for a better look. "Look how much sharp teeth he has..."

The sharpedo could sense the fear in Crystalania. However, he knew she could tell his intentions by this point. He pretended to be oblivious. He acted as though he wasn't even paying attention to her. He just looked in different directions as he paced the water back and forth, all while keeping her in the corner of his vision.

"Oh, so that's what those are called." Gads peered into the open waters. He observed the predatory fish moving nearby. ~Look at him, enjoying that warm sunlight. Not a care in the world and I bet he'd never be made fun of.~ He moved a little closer to Cris. "I've seen them before. Those teeth really scare me."
Gads watched the sharpedo pass a second time, "Good thing this place is safe from them. If we hang out in the shadows, he won't see us at all. He might still smell us though, but hopefully, he'll just loose interest and chase after something else. "And, your name is really pretty. I bet you'll outgrow it one day and have to think of an even longer and more beautiful one."
The pot-bellied horsea refocused his eyes, the closest thing to a blink he could make, "I can only hope that I might make it long enough in life just to grow bigger than the mouths of other fish."

"Awww, thanks Gads," said Cris. "I hope I dun have to come up with a longer one! That was the longest and most prettiest one I could think of. If I thought of a longer one I'll prolly forget it."
She peered out at the sharpedo, who was still circling outside, then her fins paddled her backwards as she withdrew into the full cover of shadows, where the enemy could not see her. He knew they were in here, all right. "Well maybe if I help you out, we can both live to get bigger. I sure don't wanna get eaten either. My mother told us that when I get big enough, healthy enough and beautiful enough then I'll evolve and that won't happen for a while. So, I hafta work on that and grow. Is that how you're gonna evolve, too?" She didn't know how horseas evolved, in fact she didn't know much of anything at all about horseas.

He was growing impatient, but the sharpedo's hunger drove him to carry on his stalking. He thought of a new tactic. He swam farther away. He hid at an angle where he can watch the entrance to Gads' home.

"well, I don't know how you'd help me out, but I'd like it if you stuck around. You're the first fish who's not called me names or run away from me." Gads rocked back and forth as he sunk into the shadows to be near the small feebas. "Uh, sorry about looking at you for a meal. Gotta eat when ever you can out here, you know."
He looked out into the open ocean and wondered if the streamlined pokemon's shadow would cross again. He had learned quickly that predators were sometimes very tricky and persistent. He'd not risk a foolish move out into open ocean until he was certain it was safe. "I'm not sure how I'm supposed to evolve, really. When I was still in the pouch, my dad would talk about how hopeful he was for us. Said we were important and would one day be the envy of all the sea pokemon in the world. I think we were a great disappointment to him when we swam free of him. 'I'm so glad your mother couldn't see you.' he told us all the day we were born." Gads siphoned water through his lips in a squirt, "I've often wondered if he said that because he thought our mother would eat us, but after the lot of us were scooped up and dumped off here, well, I'm sure it was because we would have made her sad too."

"Oh, it's okay, I am kinda small and you didn't know me yet so...I'll let it go." Just dun do it again." She winked one of her big round dark-circled eyes at him. When she heard what his dad had said, she shook her head, meaning her body, from side to side in sadness. "That's so horribles! Why, though? I don't get it. Was it that you're another colour from other horseas?" She had never seen a horsea up close and in detail, so didn't recall that he looked much different from one. You know what, maybe that'll alllll change when you evolve! My kind starts out really little and kinda ugly--well I don't think *I* am ugly, but some fish say we are--but we sure get a lot more beautiful when we evolve. I bet when you evolve you can go back and show him how great you got and then he'll see...he was wrong."

"Oh no... oh no no noooooo way!" Gads shook his long lips. "I wouldn't go back there for all the food in the world. There are huge scary back where my dad is. Things that can live out of water and take us out of it. I'd rather stay here and take my chances with that sharpedo outside."

The sharpedo began to grow weary. Waiting outside for the opportunity was proving to be more trouble than it's worth. If nothing happened soon, he would give up.

"I think that sharpedo could eat both of usses at one time," said Cris. She looked back out towards where it had been, but couldn't see it. She swam right to the edge to see if it was still there. She sighed. "I'm so hungry I could eat a sharpedo!" She giggled.

The sharpedo had grown too weary of waiting. He decided to take the opportunity of Cris swimming to the entrance to attack. He darted forward and opened his teeth-lined jaw.

"LOOK OUT LOOK OUT LOOK OUT!!!" Gads shouted and bumbled forward as fast as he could. If the sharpedo got Cris, there was nothing he could do, but there was no way he was going to just sit in the darkness while the first fish who was ever nice to him was alive and in possible danger.

Cris saw the sharpedo dart in at her and screamed, "EEEEEEEEEE!" as she flapped her fins as hard as she ever had in her little life. Her desperate paddling brought her back into the full shelter of the crevice, barely missing the teeth of death.

"HEY KNOCK IT OFF! LEAVE US ALONE!!" Gads shouted. He felt a little braver in the safety of his humble grotto. He was glad he had chosen a place where large predators like sharpedo could not reach inside. His only fear was of a smaller predator like a krabby or the moldable bodied octillary slipping inside. "Cris, what are we gonna do?" he asked the little feebas with him, "That big hungry fish doesn't look like he's gonna leave anytime soon."

"Maybe there's a way out the back?" The feebas didn't take her eyes off the sharpedo. She has swum backwards along with Gads into where the enemy could not reach, but that meant they had to wait until the sharpedo decided to leave. "Mebbe he'll give up now he can't get us. If, uh...if there's not another way out." She didn't see one, but then she hadn't explored in the furthest recesses of the cave.

Gads looked deeper into the cavern. "I've never really gone further into the dark than where I could see the light. I don't know how far it goes or if there is a way out at all. " The horsea looked at the teeth of the pokemon still trying to break into his grotto, a place he had chosen because it was small enough to keep predators out. "Sheesh, are sharpedo always this dense?" Gads grumbled. ~You'd never see me wasting my energy to get half a mouthful or less of food.... not like we're the only fish on the reef.~ he added in thought to himself. Gads had decided that this particular type of pokemon were dangerous, but dull witted as the broken chunk of corsola horn he used as a anchor.

"I don't think so," said Cris. "I only ever saw one other one and when I got away into a small place it swam away. 'Cause it knew, there was no getting ME once I already got away." She looked back at the sharpedo, scared but pretty sure that the thing could not bite its way in. At least not without losing a lot of teeth, and he was bound to realise they weren't worth that sort of injury. "Well maybe if we keep swimming deeper in we'll find another light and that'd mean we found another way through? Cause well...we can't go out that way. His head's...in the way." That was pretty obvious, but oh well.

The way Gads saw it, he had two choices. Watch a predatory fish lose his teeth on the rocks, or go exploring into the dark with his new fish friend. While the first had a rather sadistic comic value, the second had a much more interesting draw to it. He would have a chance to try bravery and adventure! "Sure, alright. Let's see where the darkness leads to." He fluttered his fins to push himself forward in the water, "We better go slowly, Crys, and stick close to each other so we don't get lost. " He clumsily pressed his side to the young feebas's side. "oops."

As Lilyana approached the sherpedo she knew something was in that little cave she thought that it would be in trouble so she decided to scare the sharpedo away so quickly she created a diversion by entering the sharpedos mind she created an illusion of a whole school of fish far off and the sherpedo saw it in his head and sped off towards the group of fish the sharpedo was totally clueless that he would never catch the fish but they would simply fade a way as soon as he got out of reach of Lilyana's mind.
Now that Lilyana had got rid of the sherpedo she used her ability once again to see how many pokemon were in the hole after a thorough search she found 2 and they were small so she knew they would not pose a threat to her so knowing they would be quite scared she entered the cave and followed the mind waves. they were moving away from her into the darkness so she quickly went back outside soaked in as much of the sunlight as possible then went back into the cave and into the dark. As soon as she entered the dark her scales shone with the most beautiful brilliance but she knew it would not last long so she chased after the 2 pokemons mind waves.

Gads had no way of knowing if the sharpedo was still back the other way or not. He just did his best to keep moving forward in the darkness. Something touched his mind, and it made him shiver with fear. ~Must be my imagination... just the dark getting to me is all. The dark and the fear of that big hungry fish outside. The dark... the fear of that fish and .... oh... is Crys still here?~
Gads couldn't tell if the slimy surface next to him was just thick waves of slime, or his new companion. "uh, uhhh.... Crys?" he whispered. He hoped she was still close by.
