Tortall's capital, Corus is home to countless citizens. Each of them live, from day to day, as well as they are able, some more legally than others, all leading lives less privileged than those of the nobility and royalty at the palace. This is a fact of life, one accepted by generation after generation, and the fact that this will likely never change does not even affect the commoners, many of whom have never so much as glimpsed a noble. This is not, however, to say that life is a picnic. Some areas are volatile after the placement of the new king – king of the rogue, that is. As with any new leader, none are certain whether the death of his predecessor, and his own rise to power, will be to their benefit or result in tragedy, and even the most law-abiding of civilians watch closely for a sign in either direction. None watch so carefully as the Provost’s Guard; new power always means a bit of chaos, making their jobs all the more difficult. Life is just as hectic within the palace walls. The unexpected arrival of the Carthaki prince, not put off that he must wait five years to marry his new fiancé, has the Master of Ceremony in a panic, an upcoming tournament has hot-headed squires eager to show off their skills, the queen’s lineage as a Copper Isles princess threatens to make itself evident, and forecasts for a poor farming season have left the king searching for an alternate way to feed his people, lest the crop fail entirely. All in all, it’s just another day in the capital, but never has any day been average in Corus
