Ages ago, when the world was still young, the various regions such as Hoenn did not yet exist. Only one massive continent existed, known to the early humans as 'Faero'.
Pokémon and humans already inhabited the region together, yet these early humans did not possess technology any more complex than crafting simple clothing, or starting a fire.
Dangerous, wild Pokémon were always on the prowl, forcing the human tribes to take up arms in an attempt to defend their settlements from the overpowering creatures.
Unable to win the fight on technological terms, these early humans of Faero instead called out towards the divine. Shamans listened to the whispers of the wind, the voice of the water and the spirits of fire, and twisted these wisdoms into magic that could aid their kind.
Through the use of milled herbs, incantations and rituals, shamans were able to prepare mixtures with potent powers, which would channel magical effects if applied in the proper rune formation, drawing upon the spirits of the world for strength.
Using this magic, shamans were able to bind beaten Pokémon to their will, training their abilities vigorously so that they could be used to defend against the savage wilds.
As time passed by, training these creatures became a common rite of passage, and dominating them was a sign of great power. Young adults wishing to prove themselves to their tribes went out with the wisdom of their shamans, aiming to capture and train strong Pokémon to defend their tribes with.
It was this solution of survival that would one day lead to the Pokémon training as it is known today...
