[ Plot ]
No lights, no sounds; just grass and weeds that envelope the city fully.
Two hundred and six years passed, and the weeds and plants have begun to take over the metal structures, concrete paths, and dingy suburbs.
Manhattan, (New York City,) New York in the United States of America:
Now when you think of what this city used to be, with its marvelous lights, splendor, and entertainment, one does not think about a town full of what the American dream was based upon.
Of course, by now, the American dream is not for the humans. The humans no longer exist as the animals and the plants do. Not in New York City, not in the United States of America, not in the entire world.
The problem of survival didn’t end with the extinction of the humans…it just began there.
Rabies
(ra bies) – n. an infections disease of dogs, cats, and other animals, transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected animal and usually fatal if prophylactic treatment is not administered: caused by an RNA virus of the rhabdovirus group; hydrophobia.
The rabid plague was a fast moving, highly contagious disease that had no cure. Its mutation, however, was far worse than that of any rabies virus human, and animal kind alike, had ever seen before. A highly developed, and superiorly strand of rabies that could affect both humans and canines developed as humans continued to develop new vaccinations and other bio-methods in an effort to cure and rid the Earth of the disease once and for all.
As a form of rabies, it continued to be transferable by saliva and blood, but added in, the air had also become contaminated with strands of the virus that made everyone a carrier of the virus, if not completely infected by it. Some, however, were immune.
The strand of Rabies was seen in California first, killing off a family’s pet, and then the family themselves. It encompassed the whole town and its inhabitants within weeks, then spread through the entire continent, later breaching even oceans to infest the entire world.
The virus couldn’t have come at the worst of time. The world, fighting amongst itself, using whatever kind of technology they could muster to kill one another, the rabies virus just acted as another element to the humans’ efforts. Besides the strand traveling the world by itself as quickly as it was, it then was used in the bio-warfare as a fatal element on each enemy who didn’t have the technology to capture the virus. Both humans and animals were at risk in this war, and in the end, only the immune would survive.
The humans were still recovering from the war of 2137 and the chemical and bio weapons that had plagued the Earth. Canines, however, suffered far worse than any other human or animal species on the planet. The strand infected all, but it seemed as if canines, wolves and dogs alike were more susceptible to the virus than any other. It baffled the greatest of scientists minds, and without a cure, the canines would become extinct.
To help save the canine species, two of each wild and domestic canine breed that were not infected with this horrible disease were shipped to domes across the world. Some of the biggest bio-domes were located in Yumen, China, Sydney, Australia and Central Park (Manhattan), New York City.
Other domes were located around the world as well, but none that got as much publicity and attention as these three. It was to save the animals just as much as it was to save the human race from the rabies virus as well.
However, as much as the humans tried to preserve themselves, the virus only grew stronger and even those whom were human and immune, no longer found sanctuary form the deadly strands of genetically enhanced rabies. The world went into another large war, and non of the humans survived.
One hundred and three years of rust and deterioration finally gave way for the domes to be reopened, and the animals, the young and the old, fit and the unfit were set free. Central Park (Manhattan), New York City, became neutral territory, for those who found they didn’t feel safe leaving the place they had all called home their entire lives. However, some ventured forth into the new, human-less world. After a while, the dome itself came down, and those who stayed behind made their homes within the rubble of the debris. There was nothing left that would keep them safe, but their instincts and their wits.
Abandoned and taken over by nature, the only thing that had survived were the animals including the canines in the dome and of course the plants, which had spread all across the city. So far it seemed as if the rabid plague had vanished, the disease was just a myth, exactly like humans.
Though there were domes all across the world our story is centered and based upon the one in Manhattan, New York City. What will happen in this year of 2340? With the death of the humans, the domestic breeds and the wild canines are joined. And yet, domesticated and wild have blended into one, and therefore, there is only wild left. They live, as dogs should; hunting and playing with no outside sources to kill them.
But one has to wonder, how long can that truly last?
