Her eyes welled up with tears when he said that they would be her friends. She rubbed agenst both of them and cryed, "Thank you! Thank you!"

"Don't get too mushy or I may change my mind," said Charna, although she had no intention of changing her mind. She had felt that much in need of a friend too many times in her life.

"Really? Okay, I guess that's me." Charna leaned down to the water's edge, grunting a little as her centre of gravity was thrown off a bit by her swollen belly. She found a small ruddy pebble and offered it to the little bird. "Here ya go...um...my gift to you?"

"Thank you." she said and toke the pebble. Her body glowed and exspanded into it's full form. when the glowing seced, the ruby pebble was set in the center of her forhead. She opened her tail feathers and they crackled with the flames that engulfed them.

Night was falling. Charna lay down to chew her cud and rest, slowly winding down. She felt like sleeping already. "You want to see something?" she asked.

When the tailflames had been extinguished, Charna lowered her lights to a very dim state. She nodded to her huge white belly. "Look." A faint glow could be seen, flickering high and low, from the inside.

"Goodnight," said Alcatraz, who made himself a place to sleep as well, nearby. He would make good on his promise to look after them.
"Goodnight," said Charna, laying down to sleep on her side, which was more comfortable for her now than being on her stomach.

ic: Next day, Charna awoke very early. She was feeling slight contractions, and at first she wasn't sure if this was it, or just false contractions. They faded, and it turned out to be a false alarm. She slowly stretched and got up, looked around. "Good morning."
