The day was perfect. The sun was standing high in the sky, sending down streams of hot air. A soft and gentle breeze blew through the tall grass, making it dance and sway as it took away a little of the heat that rose from the earth. Fearow and Spearow circled the sky high above and a herd of Tauros was grazing not far ahead, one of them stomping a hoof occasionally and the sound of snorts could be heard all the way over to the other side of the small river.

A small group of 25 Ponyta and Rapidash stood there, grazing under the watchful eye of the leading stallion, Markab. He was proud of them all and as he watched them graze, play or nurse their young ones he could feel his heart swell. Most of all he watched the foals though. He had sired six this past breeding season and five of them had already been born. The four filly's he watched with laughter in his eyes, chuckling as they messed around with the water a bit.

The last one however, he had taken to watch with avid interest and sometimes even worry. Orion used to play with his sisters so much, but lately the young colt had been staring in the direction of the mountains a lot, often seen with his mind elsewhere. Markab knew something was off after the filly's had been running to their mothers and Orion followed over an hour later, but the colt had been extremely tight lipped and refused to answer his questions, risking bringing his fathers anger down on him.

What was wrong, he did not know. But as long as nothing else happened and he did not endanger the herd, he would not do anything else. He had been punished for his insubordination already. The only thing he feared, was that Orion might not want to take over the herd. In which case Markab would have a problem. A shout over at the riverside caught his attention and he turned to see what was going on.

---

Orion had been standing there, watching the mountains and wondering what lied behind them as suddenly a mare collapsed near him. With a startled neigh he jumped, watching the well rounded mare with avid interest. She was giving birth! The contractions had started so sudden that the poor girl had been left with no choice but to give birth right here and now. A few of the other mares started fussing and pushed Orion and the other foals aside with their noses, all gathering around their fallen comrade.

As Markab trotted over, even he received a few kicks to the belly as the tried to see what was going on, until Orion's mother came out of the tightly packed group of females, glaring at their so called fearless leader.

"What are you doing?" She hissed at him, and he frowned with displeasure at being addressed like this. "What do you mean, woman? I want to know what is going on, as is my right!" He puffed up his chest a bit and straightened his neck as if he needed to intimidate her, when she rolled her eyes, ruining the moment.

"For the love of..." She gave him a nudge with her hindquarters, indicating that he remove himself quite fast. "She is in labor, you daft creature. Now, get lost and take your progeny with you." At her last word, she made a motion towards her son, who was currently craning his neck to see what was going on.

At her words, Markab found blood rising to his cheeks. Labor! That meant women things and he did not need to know of those. All he did was provide the means. How they handled themselves after that was their problem. With a cough he excused himself, walking away from the pack of Rapidash busying themselves with their herd mate and nudged his son.

"Come, boy." As Orion looked up at his father, the curiosity in his eyes was undeniable. "This is not a place for us to be right now."

--- [Shifting into correct person view: Orion's third person] ---

Trotting to keep up with his fathers walk, Orion kept looking backwards many times. Where were they going? What was wrong with Matar? Would she die? When they left it sounded like she was in pain... As he looked up to the, in his eyes enormous, Rapidash walking next to him, he couldn't help but asking the million questions going through his head.

Markab laughed then, shaking his mane with a graceful motion. "No, silly colt. She will not die. You will merely gain another sister, or perhaps a brother this time." The older pokemon gazed at the plains ahead of him in contemplative silence. This might be a good moment to bring up what had been wrong with Orion the past few weeks. Orion frowned, not understanding.

"But I thought sisters and brothers came from eggs?" He blinked up confusedly, earning himself another smile.

"Yes, but these eggs sometimes hatch within a pokemon and then it's called giving birth." Suddenly remembering that all of the other mares had successfully secluded themselves before birthing, he turned to his son. "Usually, when a mare becomes a mother, she goes away from the herd to give birth. She wants peace and quiet. But sometimes, like with Matar, the baby Ponyta comes very fast and then they can't seclude themselves. Then all the males must leave the place, for it is a sacred happening, when a new foal is born into this world. They say that if a stallion, or a colt like yourself," he nudged his son again with his nose, "is there, then the young one will never have a burning flame." Orion stared at his dad with wide open eyes and then back at the herd, still fussing.

"But how does the egg get into Matar?" His face scrunched up a bit as he struggled to understand what was happening here. Didn't eggs fall from heaven? Markab, on the other hand, could feel the tips of his ears go red. Oh dear. Silverhoof clearly had not told their boy about the Pidgey's and the Beedrills yet. With a groan, the older Rapidash shook his mane again. "Ask your mother, she's better at that stuff then I am." He muttered before looking up at the Tauros that made his way over to them.

"Good day, Markab!" The other greeted them jovially. Markab nodded at the great beast in greeting. "Good day, Aldebaran. How is your herd faring today?"

Aldebaran swung his head from left to right. "Good, good, thank you. And yours? Seems to be quite the consternation over there." He gave a pointed look at the mares and then looked at Orion, who was staring at the huge Tauros with unconcealed awe. "This your boy?"

Markab nodded. "Yes, this is young Orion. Quite the sight, isn't he? And over there, dear Matar is finally giving birth."

As the two got into a conversation about how late Matar was and how good it was that the weather would remained unchanged for now, Orion marveled at being this close to the massive pokemon they had always admired from afar. His own hoof would fit into that of the other more then three times! He was just about to put his hoof next to that of Aldebaran when a whoop rose from the crowd. He turned his head around so far that he pulled a muscle and as he groaned, his father gave him a soft bite to his withers and a soft shove. "Come on, we have to go and greet the new one."

They each said their goodbyes to the Tauros and cantered over to their own herd again, where Silverhoof jumped out. "It's a boy, Markab! A beautiful and healthy boy!" The stallion reared up on his hind legs and neighed hard and loud, spreading the news over the plains. Hoots and congratulations flew in from the surrounding area's where other herds had been following the progress of their going ons.

Making their way to the center of the herd, Markab and Orion saw Matar lying there on her side, with a new born Ponyta sitting next to her, looking out into the world a bit blearily before attempting to get up onto his rather wonky legs. Orion snickered but shut up after a warning glance from his mother. Matar got up with a soft oomph as well and looked at her new born with loving eyes, before turning to Markab. "Your son, Baham." Markab walked over to the new one and nuzzled his face gently, before stepping back again and giving Matar a nuzzle as well. "Congratulations and thank you."

With that, the ritual was fulfilled and the whole herd started congratulating the new mother and foal, who was now standing securely on way to long limbs, looking up at all the new faces with something akin to fear in his eyes when his mother finally gave him a nudge and they moved to quieter places.

Orion stood there looking at them for a long time, until his mother and Markab came over to him, looking at each other with worry once more. Orion turned to them at once, a question burning on his lips and decided to give it a go. "This means I don't have to take over, right?"

Markab blinked, that had not been what he was expecting. "Sorry?"

Orion looked at the new colt again and felt his confidence grow even more. "This means Baham can take over if he's old enough. So I can go and discover the world!" Markab stood there, staring at his son in surprise.

"I... thought you wanted it, the leadership. That you wanted to take over." He walked over to his son and stood next to him, looking at the new born first and then turning his gaze to the older one. "Was I wrong in assuming so?" Orion looked up and smiled.

"No. I did want it at first. But then... I heard about oceans and beaches and deserts and other pokemon, like dragons! Dad, did you know there are pokemon that can influence the weather, or... that can read your mind?" He started talking about all the things he had learned from Vulpix as his parents watched him avidly.

"And then he said that if they want to, they can evolve into at least six different kinds of pokemon! Isn't that amazing?!" Markab sighed, before smiling at him.

"Yes, indeed it is." Sharing a knowing look with Silverhoof, Markab scraped his throat. "Well, I suppose that if you want to go and see the world, you could." Orion's eyes grew large and he almost jumped up and down, barely repressing the urge to do so. "But! Only on the condition that you will wait until spring, and that you will not go alone."

His excitement still there, Orion nodded and thanked them both a thousand times before running off to tell the girls about this new info and, of course, about his earlier meeting with the 'as big as a mountain!' Tauros.

[--- Time shift to the next summer, so he's a year old now ---]

Snorting as he could smell the scent of his sisters in the air, Orion jumped up, switching from a relaxed canter into a full out gallop as he gave chase, racing across the plains and soaring in the wind, his flaming mane trailing behind him like a banner. He was still a colt, but he had grown from the lanky, inexperienced youth he had been last summer, into a strong young stallion. His legs were strong and his eyes were sharp as he crossed the river within a single jump, narrowly avoiding running into a passing Tauros as he leaped and jumped right over her.

Gathering all of his strength in his limbs he raced and ran, until he could go no further. There she was. Enif and Baham were gathering berries and the filly was laughing about something the young colt had said. Baham was the perfect son. Strong, well proportioned, gleaming white coat and red hot mane, whereas he himself had never turned white, instead being stuck with his dapple grey coat and blue mane. He gnawed the inside of his cheek irritatedly as he watched his sister frolic around with the young one. He was grateful of his birth, because it allowed him to be free, but somehow he had gotten used to being the pampered apple of his parents eye. And with the coming of Baham, it all changed.

All he had to do now, however, was find a partner who was willing to accompany him on his journey to the north. Or the west, or south or wherever!

[OOC: All names, with the exception of Orion [Whose name comes from the Constellation Orion] and Silverhoof [Named after the color of her hooves], originate from the constellation of Pegasus. Aldebaran is a star in the constellation Taurus]

--- [ 30 minutes prior...] ---

Silent and watchful like a Noctowl closing in on it's prey, Hattori the Farfetch'd drifted along the waters surface, leaving a trail of ripples in his wake in the shape of a "V" as he propelled himself along with light strokes of his webbed feet, which were submerged just below the mirror-like surface. The water giving the illusion that he was swimming through the cloudless blue sky. With his most prized possession - his leek, clutched between his beak, Hattori steered himself towards a patch of reeds, their yellowing stalks jutting out of the river surface like arrow shafts.

His eyes wide and alert, the tiny black pupils flitting about and pressing against the edges of his eyelids as he looked around wary for signs of trouble, he drifted slowly and cautiously into a small cove surrounded on all sides but one by the reeds, settling himself into the center. Where the tall reeds blocked out some of the sunlight, providing an area of shade. Nervously glancing from shadow to shadow, his muscles tensed, slowly the Farfetch'd's eyelids began to close. At first he fought against it, his eyes snapping back open immediately after they shut. But soon his reactions began to grow slower and slower, and like a black veil being pulled over him he found himself in the warm and empty world of sleep.

10... 20... nearly 30 minutes passed by for Hattori in the place where he went when his brain shut down, a meager 30 minutes in that soft quiet world where he tried to relax, but couldn't. The inevitable knowledge that soon he would wake persisting even though he was asleep, refusing to leave him to lie in peace for what little time he had. His eyes slowly opening, then flicking open and widening to their max as where he was and who he was came flooding back to him in a great tide, taking another glance at the area around him. To his shock, it was not the hollow he had fallen asleep in, instead, the current had pulled him out and sent him downstream, into deeper water.

Whether it was a premonition or some kind of sixth sense Hattori didn't know, but some urge, some instinct drove him to leap up out of the water with a mighty flap of his wings, right as a titanic maw large enough to swallow him whole lunged out of the cloudy depths below him, snapping shut and clipping off the back of his tail-feathers. Flapping his wings urgently, Hattori glided a few meters forwards before he finally lost momentum and dropped back down into the water. His legs moving much faster now as he accelerated to his top speed, a dark shadow beneath the surface moving to follow him.

Not bothering to take a glance back over his shoulder, knowing that nothing he could possibly see would make him go any faster than he was already, Hattori paddled towards the riverbank, desperate to get away from whatever was chasing him. His feet scooping up silt as he reached the shallows, turning the water brown, he hastily leap out and began to run rather comically away from the river, feathers flying out behind him as he flapped his wings to try and lift off into the air. Now taking a glance back, he let out a shriek "EiiiiieeeeeeyAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" as he saw a Feraligatr rear it's head out of the water, roar at him, and begin climbing out of the water, moving on all fours at great speed after him.

His feet lifting off the ground in mid-run, Hattori began to skim over the surface of the plains, slowly gaining speed and altitude until he was about shoulder-height, the Feraligatr turning around and giving up. His heart beating like mad, adrenaline pumping through his overshot endocrine system, the Farfetch'd's eyes widened even more as coming over the hill he found himself faced with a wall of flesh. Closing his wings, he dived between Orion's legs at high speed, crashing painfully into the ground and skidding through a full meter of grassy earth before stopping. Lying stunned with his head buried beneath a drumlin and a miniature mountain of grass clippings.

The minutes he spend watching his younger brother were wasted as he should have been training for the journey Orion knew he was going to start on one day. As he shook his mane to get rid of nasty thoughts and nostalgic memories, preparing on turning around for another run, he heard some godawful screeching come near. Ears springing forward and eyes searching the land for danger, his entire posture screamed full alert. Scanning the plains for some sign of enemies or worse, his brows furrowed when he came up with nothing.

On impulse, he turned back to the two he had been watching, just to check if they were still okay. Enif glanced at him in question and Baham had moved to a location behind her, eyes fearfully glancing at something behind him. As the sound grew louder, Orion's eyes widened almost comically as 'something' landed between his legs. He gave a most disturbing little jump kick out of surprise, before settling back on earth a few feet away. His heart beat had increased dramatically and adrenaline flooded his bloodstream as he stood there, next to his herd-sister and brother, looking at what seemed to be... a feathered leek?

Curiosity taking over now that they had determined this screaming thing as a non-dangerous entity, Orion stepped closer, staring at it and trying to decide on whether or not he was going to poke it with his nose. It looked like a ball of feathers, sticking out every which way, with a leek coming out on top. But wait! There was a leg, or at least something that looked like a leg.

Baham cocked his head to the side before turning towards Orion. "Is that a plant? Can we eat it?" Orion snorted and rolled his eyes at the younger one lifting his head once more.

"No, Baham. This is... or.. well, it looks like a bird of some sort." At the questioning glance he received from the other he sighed. "Uh, like the Tailow and Pidgey?" Understanding dawned on the young ones face and he walked over to the clump of feathers, poking it with one of his hooves. "Well, it looks dead." He stated, clearly a lot more brave now that he knew that the was not going to be an enemy.

Dazed from the impact, and from the lack of oxygen available with his head buried almost completely in earth, Hattori let out a muffled groan, barely audible through the layers of muck covering him. Feeling himself beginning to slip unconscious, he gave a start as he felt something touch him! A hard, smooth object... maybe a claw? And he wasn't sure, but he could have sworn he'd heard something sounding like "eat it" from outside. With his last shreds of strength from his last breath, Hattoi began scrabbling with his legs and struggling to pull his head out from where it had been trapped, wiggling his leek around in an attempt to weaken the drumlin's foundations.

Finally the earth gave way and slid off his head and down his back as he rose up out of the pile, taking a deep gasp of sweet crisp oxygen, his head beginning to throb with pain as the feeling of numbness went away. Scrabbling forwards, smearing dirt over the creamy plumage of his chest, he turned his head around to look behind him, gazing with terror up the muzzle and into the eyes of a Ponyta standing over him. "KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" He screeched into the creature's face, pushing himself backwards with his webbed feet, scraping his rear through more dirt and sullying his feathers even more.

His leek falling out of his mouth, he quickly grabbed it in his left wing and pointed it like a weapon at the larger of the two Ponyta, his unblinking eyes boring into those of his supposed attacker. "Back! Back back back back, BACK! You try eat me, I hit you hard! Verrrrrrry hard! I'm not your lunch!" Hattori made clear to his two mystery assailants, narrowing his eyes suspiciously and glancing between the two. "Who are you? Who sent you? Where am I? Who are you? No, YOU!" Pointing the leek directly at Orion, he gazed into the stallion's eyes, making it clear who he was asking the question of.

Coming forward as the clump of dirt, feathers and leek started to move, Enif pulled Baham behind her body again. The three of them backed off a little, unsure of what to expect. Orion contemplated giving the fallen one a hoof, but decided not to, as the other might not feel as grateful if he nudged him with his hoof.

Not a minute later, a very crumpled Farfetch'd came up for air. With it's eyes staring every which way in a delirious fashion, feathers still haywire, dirt and mud everywhere it wasn't supposed to be, the bird had the look of a creature returning from the dead. It went berserk and started screaming again, moving away from them. Moving was pretty much the only way to describe the odd, half run, half crawl and a little part falling the bird was currently engaging in. Then, to top the highly unusual and odd situation off, it started poking it's leek at them in a threatening manner. Orion had to somewhat contain his laughter.

One of the few things his mind was providing him with as he stared in the eyes of a mad pokemon was: 'You have got to be kidding me.' When the Farfetch'd spoke, the voice that came out spoke volumes of the personality that had come up with the words. "Back! Back back back back, BACK! You try eat me, I hit you hard! Verrrrrrry hard! I'm not your lunch!" He alternated pointing his leek at Enif and Orion, finally seeming to decide that Orion was in charge as he finished his odd game off roulette at him. "Who are you? Who sent you? Where am I? Who are you? No, YOU!"

Orion stared at him some more and then shook his head, righting himself and standing at his full height. Which, all in all was not all that impressive, but would be once he evolved. Or so he told himself. Sharing a glance with Enif, who shrugged, he spoke, trying to sound like he knew what had just happened and he was not just as confused as the rest of them. "I am Orion, son of Markab, the leader of our herd." He motioned his head towards the direction the Farfetch'd had come from, or at least generally so, he continued. "You are currently located at the Herdlands of the Downs of Infinity." As he finished he turned back to the bird-pokemon.

"And we do not eat bird. Or any other kind of meat for that matter." With a small look of arrogance on his face, he looked down at Hattori. "We eat grass. And berries. and sometimes other plants. But never meat." Why on earth would the other think they were going to eat him? Of course they wouldn't. Wait, he hadn't heard Baham, had he? The little one meant no harm, but he had not known what he had been speaking of when he said what he said.

Hattori narrowed his eyes up at the Ponyta, watching him stand to his full height in what was no doubt meant as an intimidation tactic. Though he disliked the arrogant way the Ponyta spoke, he found it more surprising that he was in fact supposed to be the leader of his herd... the three of them that he could see. "You? The leader of a herd?" He asked, the oddity of the statement making him temporarily forget his situation. The corners of his beak turning up, Hattori threw his head back and let out an odd noise; "Duk duk duk duk duk duk duk duk duk!" his own unique form of laughter. The leek wobbling in his grip as his muddy and bruised body shook with involuntary convulsions of laughter, tears of merriment began to flow from the duck's wide eyes, though he still never blinked once during the whole fit.

Finally regaining some degree of composure, enough to speak at least. Hattori voiced the reason why he found the situation so funny. "But... you're so small! I'm sure I've seen far bigger horses than you out in the fields..." He said, his voice still showing some signs of his earlier merriment. "Or is that you plan!?" Hattori yelled out, jumping up to his feet and once again pointing the leek in a threatening manner, his suspicion returning to replace his joviality. "To throw me off guard with such a... such a... Farfetch'd statement! And then trample me into the grass with your hooves and eat me! A-HA!"

Smiling triumphantly, puffing out his chest with pride, Hattori nodded, "Yes, that must be it!" speaking more now to himself than Orion. "Yes, another conspiracy thwarted! Why, that makes the third one today! Or yesterday... come to think of it what time is it?" Standing there, talking to himself, his eyes moved over to Orion again, shooting him an angry glance. "Why are you still here? I know what you're after! You can't trick me you sly... horse! Shoo!" Taking a bold step forward, Hattori began trying to shoo the three Ponyta away with wide sweeps of his wings, his eyes narrowed at them and his leek clutched in his beak. "Froo! Froo! Gref owtta here!" He shouted, his words muffled by his leek he was holding.
